On the back a note "Auf der Alten Leinwand monogrammiert AR" "On the old canvas monogram AR".

The work, of great quality, shows a remarkable mastery in the use of the brush, with which the artist with skilful and confident touches has managed to highlight the extraordinary expressive power of the gaze that highlights the proud attitude of the subject.

Presumably we are dealing with a life portrait, perhaps of a painter or artist in the guise of St. James.

Although the atmosphere of the work is very reminiscent of the caravaggesque character, we find ourselves hypothesizing a dating on the border between the end of the 18th and the first decade of the 19th century.The pictorial surface of the complexion is resolved with large brush strokes of light and dark spots and the simplification of the lines of the drapery, lead us to hypothesize a dating close to the end of the 18th century, probably French or in any case a northern European painter.In some ways, the work as a whole is very reminiscent of the German school of Anton Raphael Mengs (Aussig Bohemia, 1728 - Rome, 1779) or the French school of Théodore Géricault (Rouen, 1791 - Paris, 1824)

Sulla retro una nota “Auf der Alten Leinwand monogrammiert AR” “Sulla vecchia fodera monogramma AR” .

L’opera, di grande qualità,  presenta una notevole maestria nel uso del pennello, con il quale l’artista, con tocchi sapienti e sicuri, è riuscito a evidenziare la straordinaria forza espressiva dello sguardo che risalta l’atteggiamento fiero del soggetto.

Presumibilmente ci troviamo di fronte ad un ritratto dal vero, forse di un pittore o artista, nelle vesti di San Giacomo.

Anche se l’atmosfera dell’opera ricorda molto il carattere caravaggesco , ci troviamo ad ipotizzare una datazione al confine tra la fine del XVIII e il primo decennio del XIX secolo.

La superficie pittorica dell’incarnato  risolto con ampi tocchi di pennello di chiaro e scuri a macchia e la semplificazione delle linee del panneggio,  ci portano a ipotizzare una datazione vicina alla fine del XVIII sec  probabilmente francese o comunque un pittore nord Europeo o

per certi versi,  l’opera nel suo insieme, ricorda molto la scuola tedesca di Anton Raphael Mengs (Aussig Bohemia, 1728 – Roma, 1779)  .
